Foreshadowing

It must have been Fall
judging from what I was wearing
and I remember what I was wearing
because I remember the cold weight of it on me
and the large drops of water that fell for days
from the underwear, socks, pants,
shirt, jacket, and shoes (shoes!)
on the clothesline.

It was a class field trip
and although I do not remember
what we had come to the lake to see
I remember falling into the dark water.
This happened years before I learned how to swim
but I remember the terror
of being pulled out of that quiet
into the loud cold daylight.
