"i think it's a substitute for hanging out with a bunch of friends in the flesh, kind of like a small dose of contact everyday."Spigot:
"There is definintely an IRC ‘community’ that keeps in touch with one another daily. It is primarily made up of people who are logged into the internet at work and can therefore keep an IRC window open. While the kind of interaction that tends to take place on IRC can seem pretty banal at times, the connections are there, and they definitely bring those who are far apart, physically, closer together, mentally."Through IRC, one can get a sense of the feel of each local community in a way not possible over the list. Unfortuantely, many people do not have access to IRC or have access only sporadically, so IRC has developed into a strange sort of sub-community. I myself find it interesting to watch the dynamics of IRC over the course of a day. A quick look into it can often leave one with a feeling of banality and even barrenness -- the flow comes in spurts, and sometimes conversations can take place at an extremely slowed down rate, since people are doing other things and only occasionally having a look into their IRC window. It is an interesting and dynamic place."
Dave Hurst:
"#leri is a playhouse where we can all interact in real time. But remember that it is a playhouse, and things can get a little rough in there sometimes."
